Starting at the Bar

Whether you have left the support systems of a law firm or are striking out as a junior barrister rather than an employed barrister, there are several considerations to take into account. This section helps you get started.

Setting up as a Barrister

At the bottom of this page, there is a checklist of some of the things you need to consider when first starting. This guide is NOT a substitute for professional advice from your accountant, IT technicians or other qualified personnel. Nor is it comprehensive. It may, however, give you some initial ideas for when you speak to these people.

Also below is access to a recorded webinar entitled: Will the phone ever ring? Starting at the Bar.  Download the PDF and follow the link on page 4 to view the recorded webinar. This is a CPD activity so you can also self verify 1.5 CPD points if you view it and answer the questions.

Remember - the NZBA Member Benefits Scheme may also help you source some of the items mentioned in this guide.

The ANZ provide a useful Starting a Business Guide here and on our member benefit ANZ listing.

And finally, learn more about our free or discounted training for members. Most of our webinars are free for members, and workshops are heavily discounted.
