International Women's Day

International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on how far we have come and what we still need to achieve. The theme this year is #AccelerateAction. According to the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report 2024, at the current rate of progress, it will take until 2158 - roughly five generations from now - to reach full gender parity.

The Global Gender Gap Report 2024 confirms Aotearoa New Zealand is in 4th place globally for countries closing the gender gap by more than 60%, with an 83.5% closure rate. However, recent research by the New Zealand Bar Association | Ngā Ahorangi Motuhake o Te Ture shows that we are not near that level in appearances by women in the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.  Our report shows women are markedly underrepresented as counsel in our higher courts, and the situation has not improved since 2012.

Watch this space for the upcoming release of our Report on the Gender Ratio of Counsel Appearing in the Higher Courts 2024.
