Memorandum of Understanding

Te Hunga Rōia Māori o Aotearoa | The Māori Law Society (THRMoA) and the New Zealand Bar Association | Ngā Ahorangi Motuhake o te Ture (NZBA) are pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two associations.

The MOU formalises a commitment by THRMoA and NZBA to strengthen their relationship for the benefit of their respective members and the wider legal profession. The agreement will support closer cooperation in encouraging and supporting Māori lawyers who wish to practise at the independent Bar, promoting greater Māori participation and representation within the independent Bar, sharing professional development initiatives, including mentoring, networking and educational opportunities, and working together to promote access to justice and uphold the rule of law.

THRMoA Co-President Wi Pere Mita said that the MOU provides a foundation to build genuine relationships across the profession. “We want this relationship to create practical opportunities for members, whether through mentoring, professional development, stronger networks or pathways into the independent Bar. Ultimately, it is about ensuring our members are supported to grow, succeed and contribute their skills and perspectives across the profession.”

NZBA President Paul David KC welcomed the agreement. “The Bar Association welcomes the opportunity for our organisations to share knowledge and skills for the benefit of our members and the wider profession. By working together, we can strengthen professional development pathways and help promote a strong independent bar in Aotearoa New Zealand.”
