Practice Resources,What is a Junior?
The term “Junior” does not refer to the barrister's “age” - it is not about whether you are a “young” or "old" lawyer. A Junior is a barrister with less than seven years’ post admission experience. The seven years may include time spent in a legal firm/public sector or other legal role.
If you were admitted as a barrister and solicitor more than seven years before joining the Independent Bar but have worked in another area (such as academic areas or non-legal areas), it is worth discussing with the NZBA Executive Director whether you can still qualify as a Junior and be eligible for the Junior member benefits.
The NZBA has a Junior Committee, for more information see our committees.
If you want to contact our junior representatives, please get in contact.
