Fee covers administration costs associated with this type of membership and includes GST. Membership expires 4 months after joining.
Obtaining a practising certificate is the final step in what can often be a lengthy planning process for practitioners aiming to join the independent bar. For those who do not already have approval to practice independently, this process may take some months to complete.
This time is when our resources and discounts are of the most benefit, such as:
- Referral to our benefit partners (including insurance and e-library ) schemes in preparation for receiving your barrister’s certificate. Please note that while you can get quotes, your eligibility for taking these benefits is dependent on you having a barrister’s certificate and paying for your membership.
- A supportive and welcoming start through access to resources (including template letters of engagement and policies required by the Client Care and Conduct Rules, networking events and mentoring.
- NZBA member deals and discounts on financial services, office equipment, travel deals and products for the home.
Continuing Professional Development, including masterclasses, workshops, CPD webinars (mostly free) and online modules.
This membership is limited to a four-month period. After confirmation of your practising certificate, you will be converted to a full ongoing membership and full membership rates will apply, pro-rated from the date of the Provisional Membership acceptance to our membership year.
Please note that some benefits, such as the Indemnity Insurance Scheme, LexisNexis e-library, and a listing on the Find a Barrister directory, are exclusive to Full Members. However, we can refer you to suppliers so that you can make advance enquiries and be ready to go once your eligibility is confirmed.
What if I am not accepted?
Our provisional membership fee is not refundable or deductible from a full membership. If your application to the bar does not progress, then your membership will lapse after four months, and your access will be revoked. Please contact us to discuss this if you have any questions.
