Garry Williams KC specialises in commercial litigation, contentious intellectual property, media law, property law, and estates and trusts disputes.
With more than 30 years’ experience, Garry acts in high-stakes matters including complex contract and shareholder disputes, defamation proceedings, and claims involving alleged breach of fiduciary duty and fraud. He has substantial experience in obtaining and resisting urgent interlocutory relief, including injunctions, search orders, and freezing orders, to protect clients’ commercial interests. He appears regularly in court and in alternative dispute resolution processes, including arbitration and mediation.
Garry is particularly well known for contentious intellectual property litigation. He acts in significant disputes involving trade marks, copyright, patents, and breach of confidence, and advises across industries including IT, pharmaceuticals, and creative media.
He works closely with instructing solicitors to develop pragmatic, client-focused strategies that align with clients’ objectives, balancing tenacity with a clear eye for resolution where appropriate.
Garry is recognised internationally, including by the World Trademark Review, and is ranked in the Chambers Global and Chambers Asia-Pacific Guides as a leading IP silk in New Zealand.
He is on the Faculty of the NZLS Litigation Skills Programme and is a member of the Education Committee of the New Zealand Bar Association. He also serves as the Deputy Chair of Harbour Basketball Association, the largest and most successful basketball association in New Zealand.
