This webinar will explore current and emerging issues in trust law, with a particular focus on procedural tools, and beneficiary remedies.

It is designed for intermediate to experienced practitioners with a grounding in trust law.

Two leading trust law experts will share insights from recent case law and practice. Dr Andrew Butler KC will examine the use of Part 19 of the High Court Rules, blessing applications, and recent developments arising from decisions of the UK Supreme Court.

Dr Rhonda Powell will address derivative claims by beneficiaries against third parties, as well as the doctrine of fraudulent calumny and its contemporary relevance.

The webinar will be chaired by Sarah Wroe, Barrister at Eldon Chambers, and will include time for discussion and questions.

Dr Andrew Butler KC

Andrew Butler KC is a senior barrister at Thorndon Chambers, with a long-established reputation as one of New Zealand’s leading practitioners in equity and trust law. His practice encompasses complex trust and fiduciary disputes, commercial litigation, and appellate advocacy, with numerous reported decisions reflecting his work in this area. He is frequently instructed in matters involving the interpretation and administration of trusts, equitable remedies, and trustee obligations. Andrew is also the General Editor of Equity and Trusts in New Zealand. His combination of extensive practical experience and scholarly leadership makes Andrew particularly well placed to speak on current and emerging trust law issues.

Rhonda Powell is a barrister at Clarendon Chambers in Christchurch and Kate Sheppard Chambers across NZ. She regularly gives legal advice and prepares and defends Court applications related to trusts, wills, estates, division of relationship property, and applications under the Protection of Personal & Property Rights Act 1988 about adults who lack capacity to manage their own affairs. In addition to client advocacy, Rhonda is regularly engaged by law firms for expert legal advice.
Rhonda has worked for top tier law firms in London, Melbourne and New Zealand specialising in high-net-worth private client law. Prior to commencing practise as a barrister, she was a Senior Lecturer at the University of Canterbury School of Law. Rhonda has spoken at numerous local, national and international conferences.
