Hugh Rennie CBE KC recently retired from an illustrious legal career that spanned six decades. He began working a law clerk when he was 15 years old. He completed secondary school part time and went on to study first for his BA (1965), followed by his LL.B (VUW) (1969). Hugh took Silk in 1995.
Hugh has sat on boards of some of New Zealand’s best-known companies and chaired numerous others. He also was one of the founders of the National Business Review and was chair of its publisher, Fourth Estate Group from 1970 to 1988.
Paul Radich KC will talk to Hugh about his career and how he remained committed to practising at the Bar up to his retirement. They will also discuss Hugh’s book, Business Revolution : The First Two Decades of National Business Review 1970-1991 (2020, Fraser Books Publishing) about the founding of the NBR 50 years ago, including the numerous defamation writs served during his time with the publication, and its commitment to “shaking up the old boys” who dominated the establishment at that time. Hugh’s book describes the major changes in New Zealand’s economy, politics and society at that time.
