Seven Lamps of Advocacy (CPD 1.5 hrs)

Nothing is so elusive as the art of acting, unless it is the sister art of advocacy. The purpose of this webinar is to highlight what are often seen as the seven major principles or lamps of advocacy. They are very old principles and often seen as lighting the darkness in our Court and hopefully guiding the footsteps of both Judges and counsel alike.

Even more so in today's world a free and honourable race of advocates is essential. Advocacy is often the outward invisible demonstration of the pursuit of justice. The purpose of this webinar is to discuss those principles many of which will be known to the more senior of you but also to offer observations from the Bench and from senior counsel as to their achievement or at least their pursuit.

Our Presenters:

The Hon Justice Dunningham
Justice Rachel Dunningham graduated BA (Hons) 1st class from Massey University, and was a secondary teacher for 11 years.  She then graduated LLB (Hons) 1st class from the University of Canterbury in 1996 and was awarded the Canterbury District Law Society Gold Medal in that year.  She joined the law firm of Buddle Findlay in Christchurch and became a partner in 2005 where she specialised in local government and resource management law, appearing in a number of important cases.  She undertook a number of roles with the New Zealand Law Society, including as President of the Canterbury-Westland Branch in 2012-13. Justice Dunningham was appointed a High Court Judge in January 2014 and is based at the Christchurch High Court.  In her spare time she can be found planting natives on her family’s small farm in the Port Hills.

​Nicholas Till KC

Nicholas is an arbitrator, mediator and civil litigator.  His background, after very broad early litigation experience, extends to Serious Fraud prosecution but predominantly commercial, professional indemnity insurance, ethics and professional discipline roles and litigation. 

He is an Arbitration Fellow of AMINZ and a member of its arbitration and mediation panels.

He has a particular interest in the techniques and art of advocacy in the modern civil courtroom.

​Phil Shamy 
Phil Shamy was admitted in 1985 and worked in a number of commercial firms conducting civil litigation until joining the Crown Solicitors in Christchurch.  He was a partner there for over 20 years during which time he conducted numerous trials on behalf of the Crown before joining the independent bar in 2014.  Since then Phil has conducted litigation on behalf of numerous clients with a focus on criminal jury trials and appellate work at all levels.
