Discussion and social get together for public lawyers and criminal lawyers.

Join speakers including Amanda Hill, Hannah Kim, Kris Gledhill and Sarah Jerebine (Chair) as they start the conversation and invite discussion of ideas and practical initiatives. This initiative is designed to connect public lawyers and criminal defence lawyers, who are interested in jointly running human rights cases affecting prisoner rights. Further speakers confirmed soon.

Following the success of last year's panel discussion at Stout Street Chambers in Wellington, which attracted strong attendance from local public and criminal law practitioners, we aim to organise similar events across New Zealand.

While there is no shortage of a willingness by both public lawyers and criminal defence lawyers to use the law to protect prisoners’ human rights, and there is no shortage of instances where human rights are at risk of being violated without court action to ensure accountability, we believe there is a knowledge gap between the two groups of lawyers who are best placed to help.  The aim of this session is to bridge the gap.

Public lawyers can help defence lawyers take the necessary preparatory steps for a public law challenge and articulate the grounds of challenge; while defence lawyers can help public lawyers by bringing human rights violations to their attention in the context of a vulnerable prisoner population.

Objectives of the presentation include:

  • Bringing together criminal and public law and aligned practitioners to meet and talk to each other
  • Demystify / identify and address barriers for each group in this work
  • Explore how they can work together
  • Encourage development of a practical self-maintaining means of working with each other

The presentation will be followed by networking and drinks and nibbles.
