Appointment of High Court Judge - Justice Cheryl Gwyn
On behalf of the NZBA, Kate Davenport QC has offered her congratulations to Justice Cheryl Gwyn on her appointment to the High Court bench. She will sit in Auckland.
The new judge began her legal career as a graduate at Chapman Tripp in 1986. She was admitted to the bar in 1987 and became a partner at Chapman Tripp. In 1996 Justice Gwyn moved to Wellington where she joined the partnership of Russell McVeagh.
Justice Gwyn was appointed Deputy Secretary for Justice in 2001 and from 2003 to 2014 was Deputy Solicitor-General for the Attorney General’s Group at the Crown Law Office. She had direct responsibility for the management of Treaty of Waitangi, constitutional and human rights law issues.
Justice Gwyn joins the bench after having served as the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security, an appointment she accepted in 2014.
