Wellington Bench & Bar Dinner
The President and Council of the New Zealand Bar Association | Ngā Ahorangi Motuhake o te Ture invite you to the 2017 Wellington Bench and Bar Dinner. We are delighted to have as our Guest Speaker, Max Duthie. Max is a partner in Bird & Bird LLP, a firm with over 1200 people in 28 offices. The 2016 Who's Who Legal describes Bird & Bird as its leading sports and entertainment firm. It states that Max Duthie is recognised as “a leading international sports lawyer”, who is highly valued for his “vast knowledge” of rules and regulations, player contracts and brand protection and marketing.
Max predominantly advises clients in football, rugby union, rugby league, cricket, tennis and cycling. Max also represents governing bodies, event organisers, agents, athletes, broadcasters and sponsors in these and other sports. He has worked on some of sport’s most significant legal cases in the last few years, such as the International Cricket Council’s prosecution of match fixing allegations against three Pakistan cricketers and the ‘bloodgate’ case (in which European Rugby Cup Limited prosecuted misconduct complaints against Harlequins and others for cheating).
Max is himself a sportsman, having played professional rugby union in England and France.
In 2013, Max was appointed to join the British and Irish Lions tour to Hong Kong and Australia, as legal officer. He has been appointed to the same role for the 2017 tour to New Zealand, where he will represent the Lions players should any disciplinary proceedings arise on the tour.
